This article discusses proper names in Ngam, a language spoken in the southeast of Chad and in the northwest of the Central African Republic. Personal names are often chosen in connection with the context of the person's birth, invoking conditions or important events that occurred at the time of the birth. They sometimes also refer to the material situation of the family or to relationships within or outside the family. In other cases, the names invoke older events, also linked to the family. Some names have an apotropaic function, particularly if the child dies after a series of hardships. In other names, the sex or the status twins, rejection of a girl, etc. is involved in the name-giving. Also, the Ngam at times draw inspiration from other languages for personal names. This paper finally also discusses toponyms, which are also often connected to major events that occurred at the location. Journal Information Æquatoria was an important journal in the Belgian colonial context, if only for its link with everyday life in the colony, its viewpoints in relation to colonial practice and the rights of the African populations. It was published in Coquilhatville now, Mbandaka, the Belgian Congo, from 1937 to 1962. The journal Æquatoria was launched by the founders of the Centre Æquatoria in 1980, under the new name Annales Æquatoria and ceased publication with the 30th 2009 issue. Annales Æquatoria appeared once a year around 600 pages per volume, with articles in French and English. A gap of 18 years separates the Annales Æquatoria from its predecessor. But the mission remained the same. Annales Æquatoria encouraged research on the Central African languages, literatures, cultures, and history in general, and on the Mongo people in particular. Publisher Information The Centre Æquatoria is a research center, library, and collection of archives, specialized in the languages, cultures, and the pre-colonial and colonial history of sub-Saharan Africa, with special emphasis on the peoples of the central Congo basin. It is located on the premises of the Catholic mission station at Bamanya, a village some 10 kms out of Mbandaka, the capital city of the Equateur Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Library of the Centre Æquatoria holds a comprehensive collection of monographs and periodicals, all related to the Africanist fields mentioned above. It contains around 8,000 books in European languages, together with the complete sets of the major Africanist series. It also contains 252 ceased about 3,500 volumes and 60 current periodicals. The Æquatoria Archives are a voluminous collection of high historiographical importance. Rights & Usage This item is part of a JSTOR Collection.
